Default Rear main seal "break in" period

Re 2002 Suburban 1500 2WD, oil leak at rear main seal. Repair crew dropped the transmission, replaced seal and it still leaks. Today, mechanic says that the seal has to "break in" for a while before it actually seals. I've never heard this before. Can this be?

Welcome to the forum.

They may have put the seal in dry and it was ruined after the crank turned over a while.

Never heard of such non sense. I have replaced or seen replaced many seals and they never leak after. The mechanic is BS. Make them do it again

Thank you. It sounded absurd to me. When I pickup up the truck, the mechanic said he also had to replace the gasket; so I have a new gasket and new seal. Won't be doing business with them again.

lol. A salesman tried to tell me that the headgasket leak on a car he was selling was engine sweat...whatever that is!
