Default 94 tracker fuel pump question

i just got a 94 tracker for $300. it didn't run, when the keyswitch was turned, the voltmeter at the pump read voltage, then it went to 0. the guys tried some other stuff with the relays, but gave up. i ran a toggle switch to the pump and it runs fine. the guy told me that hea fuel pump would stop when it got to pressure, but i was wondering if this would hurt anything. i don't want to mess it up, but i'm broke too. i like the kill switch so i'd like to keep it.

also, i forgot to add yesterday: i was wondering if anyone knows if it is normal for the engine to turn 4200 rpm at 70 mph in my tracker? it seems like the tranny is missing high gear, it has no overdrive. like i said, it's completely new to me, just checking.

When key is turned on but not all the way to start, the pump runs for about 6 seconds and shuts off. For safety reasons. When engine is running it stays on of course.
