High RPM at 55 mph
I have a 2000 Tracker 4wd with a 2.0 engine. My question is one of high rpm's at 55 mph. I recently noticed that everything seems fine until I start approaching 55 mph. The engine is obviously racing and the tachometer shows 3400 rpm. I took the car to a mechanic thinking it was not shifting into overdrive. (I first checked to make sure the overdrive switch was in the on position.) The mechanic hooked it up to his computer and said everything was fine, it is geared that way because of the 4wd. He took me on a test ride with the computer hooked up showing me that it does go through all 4 gears and the torque converter is working properly, and that the overdrive switch is functioning properly. I still do not think this is normal and was wondering if anybody else has experienced this, and what it may be. Please help, as I think the car is great except for this one thing.
I test-drove a 1996 Tracker today that seemed to have a high RPM when I hit 55 mph. It the tach settled in around 3400 rpms. I know nothing about the vehicle, except that it does have 4 wd. Not sure if it was turned on or not. Is that normal to be so high?
Both my 1999 and 2003 Trackers have the 2L 4 cylinder with Automatic & 4WD, and when in OD, the tach reads right around 2500. When the OD is disabled by pressing the push button switch on the shifter, the RPM goes up to around 3500 RPM. Sounds to me like yours isn't going into OD, but you said the mechanics all said it was - strange!
I have a 1996 2WD, A/T and have the same issue with the high RPM. Mine doesn't have an O/D option, at least I don't think it does. There is no O/D button on the shifter or anywhere else. My thought is that there were models without O/D. Can anyone confirm?
