Replacing fog light bulbs is easy. This guide will show you just how simple it can be on a Silverado 1500.

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (1999-2006).

Fog lights are essential for driving in hazardous weather because they cast a low-wide beam that helps illuminate the road better when visibility is low. However, like any other bulb, they will burn out with use. Fortunately, there's no need to take your Silverado 1500 to a shop for such a simple task as replacing a fog light bulb. The installation is something anyone can do. The steps below will light the way.

Materials Needed

  • Pair of replacement fog light bulbs

It's recommended that you replace both fog light bulbs. When one bulb is out, the other is likely on its way out, too.

Step 1 – Remove the headlight housing and bulb sockets

In order to get access to the fog lights, you're going to have to remove the headlight housing. Simply pull out the fastening pin at the top of the headlight housing and it will come loose. Twist the headlight bulb sockets and pull them out of the headlight housing. Set the housing and bulbs aside where they'll be safe.

Step 2 – Replace the fog light bulb

You'll find the socket for the fog light bulb deep underneath where the headlight housing was. Reach down there and twist the socket loose and pull it out so you can change the bulbs. Just pull the old fog light bulb straight out of the socket, and insert the new bulb. It should snap into the socket. Return the fog light bulb socket to the fog light housing, twisting the socket to lock it into the housing. Then return the headlight housing to it's original place, locking the headlight bulbs to the headlight housing. Return the fastening pin to hold the headlight housing in place.

Turn on the truck and test the fog lights. If they don't work, try reinserting the fog light bulbs into the sockets. If that doesn't work, try using a different pair of fog light bulbs.

Pro Tip

The space around the fog light bulb socket is very tight. If you're having a hard time reaching it, you can always try reaching the bulb socket from underneath, but you'll need a floor jack to lift the front end of the truck.
