Default 2005 Express Water Pump

4.8 with 135k. Water pump is weeping and will be replaced this weekend. In addition to the pump, I plan on replacing the thermostat, belts if needed, and flushing the system. I was told to replace the fan clutch as well. Are there any surprises in the r n r that I should know about prior to tearing into this thing, or is it a straight forward operation? Thanks.

Why replace the fan clutch? I have never worked on the 4.8, but I thought it was just water pump, thermostat, and add some fresh fluid to top up.

I thought it a bit odd as well, but it was explained to me that the operation of the clutch over time weakens the spring. Replace it while it is already off?

The spring is what activates the fan when it gets warm enough.......it does not need servicing......my 2002 has the original clutch and it works fine....
Also when you remove the belt for inspection, turn the idler pulleys to see if the bearings feel okay.....replace them if not.

have to agree about the fan; do not replace it. make sure to keep it upright; do not lay it flat. I've seen new ones stored improperly for long periods stick on.
