Default odometer / shift indicator not lighting

I have a 98 blazer ls that lost it's displays for the shift indicator and odometer, is there a repair for this or do I have to replace the cluster? Will clusters from another year work?

I had this problem on a 97 ck 1500. drove me crazy!!! Threw out all kinds of transmission codes! replaced cluster twice(used) the same! It turned out to be the ignition switch! Hope this post will help someone in the future.

Changed the cluster. Got a used one, added 80,000 miles to the truck.
