Default 285 or 305 TIRES

getting some new tires this summer prolly a 285 possible 305...im going for the rugged off-road mud tire look but i have noticed that alot of m/t tires wear out very quickly on the roads(ill be taking long trips going to college in the fall)...what would you suggest to get the rugged look but not the quick wear.
