RE: Improving gas mileage
I'm looking into purchasing a full size truck. I currently own a 2006 colorado, and city driving i'm getting between 13.5 and 15.5. mpg. To be honest i'd rather have a full size truck to haul the toys around, as well as a trailer if i opt for one in the near future. Currently the colorado isn't rated for the type of trailer i would like to purchase (tent trailer with atv storage). I'm just debating on whether or not it's worth waiting for the 2009 hybrid versus a 2008 2500 with a 6 speed. Oh and the mileage doesn't seem to be that bad, for a truck that is.

RE: Improving gas mileage
Once my truck was broken in I was getting about 16.5 to 17 MPG combined. When I had the new 32inch tires put on in March 2008 the combined MPG dropped to 15.5 to 16. I will always drive a truck but I wanted to save some cash at the pump. I did a bit of research on hypermiling. Many of the techniques involve hybrid cars but others can be applied to any vehicle. Igassed up on 6/23/08 andhere are some of thechanges I made.....
1. Oil Change with royal purple 5W-30 (it had been 7000 miles since the last change)
2.Bumped Tire pressure to 44PSI (max is 44PSI, dispite the increase the tires still made plentyof contact with the road)
3. Drive the Speed Limit
4. If conditions permitted drivebelow the speed limit (if the amount of traffic was low I would drive 60MPH in a 65 or 70 MPH zone)
5. Coast as much as possible. Coast down hills and coast up to stop signs/red lights (if you are going to stop why are you still accelerating?)
6.Accelerate slowly but not too slow (keep inbetween 1500 and2000RPMs )
7.Use A/C is little as possible, Windows up when driving over 50mph
8.Idle as little as possible (IfI know the light is going to stay red for a while I turn off the truck)
9. Brake as little as possible (I have been rolling many more stop signs, I tend to do this at night when there is little/no traffic. I do this at my own risk)
At the next fill up on 7/2/08I calculated my MPG (combined) as 18.4!!! The previous tank had a combined MPG of 15.4. An extra 3MPG!!! On the next tank in addition to the things above I plan to.......
1. Add Lucas Oil Fuel treatment (last treatment 7000miles ago)
2. Coast when I can with the truck in Neutral
3. Clean my AEM airfilter.
Maybe I can get up to 19 MPG combined!!!
Do some research on hypermiling, its not just for hybrids.

well lets see there must be something you guys are doing to get only 15 to 18 because my silverado gets about 480 to 465 miles to a tank which is about 20 miles a gallon. and i don't drive slow i normally drive fast always and i have 20's. i do have alot of mods on the engine too though. the intake, dirty oil and tire pressure isn't gonna take off 30% of 18 miles per gallon that would only 12 miles per gallon. it would probably take off 1 to 1.5 miles a gallon.
