Default P0442 on 2002 Silverado Z71 with 5.3L

Hi, I have a 2002 Silverado Z71 with a 5.3L.
Service engine soon light just came on.

I have done a bunch of reading on this, and trending to bringing it to a place that knows how to diagnose and fix these issues with the EVAP system - seems like that smoke test is the best bet.

Before I do that, I did notice a fuel smell that is strongest near the driver's side door down near the rocker. I cannot see any evidence of leaking gas, i.e., no gas on the pavement, I cannot see any leaks underneath, etc. I am hoping this fits something someone has seen before and can help me pinpoint the issue, so I can DIY fix it.

The truck has 146K on the clock.

Note: the exact text read by my scanner was this:
P0442
01/02

and

P0442 P
02/02

I have not been able to find any deeper interpretation of the "01/02" or "02/02" or the additional "P" after the code.

thank you all!

You need to replace the evap vent solenoid right behind cab on driver side, mounted on top of the frame rail. The filter gets clogged over time and the vent solenoid sends a signal to the computer setting a code. It will have a large plastic line coming from the evap canister to the solenoid along with a electrical connection. There is an updated kit that includes the solenoid and a remote filter that you mount on top of transmission. The kit can run anywhere from $85up.
