Golden Anniversary: The Silverado Name Turns 50 in 2025
Originally a trim for C/K series pickups in 1975, the Silverado became its own model in 1999 and has been going strong ever since.
It is hard to believe, but 2024 is quickly drawing to a close. We are seeing more and more Chevrolet Silverados with Christmas trees and holiday gifts in their beds. That means 2025 is almost here. And 2025 is a special one for the Silverado name. It will mark 50 years since it was first used. Of course, today everyone knows the Silverado as the popular pickup truck. But when the Silverado name first appeared in 1975 it was just a trim level on the C/K series pickups. It was not until 1999 that Silverado became its own line.
To say the Silverado has been a success would be an understatement. For the last 25 years, Chevrolet has sold more than 500,000 Silverados a year. The pickup truck is not just a success for Chevrolet but also for America. Every $1 added value generated by Silverado can create an extra $2 to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).
The truck has been and remains such a hit because of constant innovation. Some examples include the first application of standard four-wheel disc brakes, the first hybrid full-size pickup and the largest, most powerful naturally aspirated available V8 in the segment. Let’s take a closer look at some Silverado highlights.
The Beginning
In 1975, the Silverado trim included features such as color-keyed carpeting, upgraded dashboard with additional gauges, woodgrain trim and the choice of special all-vinyl seat trim, or basket-weave nylon cloth and vinyl.
For the first Silverado model year in 1999 the truck introduced an all-new three-section frame which was stronger and more rugged for improved stiffness, ride and handling. The AutoTrac four-wheel drive system debuts. And the Chevy truck had the largest cab of any full-size pickup in the segment.
Improvements
The 1999 Silverado was great, but Chevy made sure it was even greater every year. It was refreshed in 2003, and it became the first full-size, crew cab pickup to offer four-wheel steer system and the first full-size pickup in the industry to include a premium Bose audio system.
The second-generation Silverado debuted in 2007 and came with even more updates. The biggest news was that it was the first hybrid full-size pickup truck. It also received a new fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, Gen IV small block V8 in 5.3L and 6.0L and more.
The third generation came along in 2014. It brought more industry firsts to the market such as Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning with an Active Safety Seat, and Front and Rear Park Assist. In 2016, it became the first full-size pickup to offer 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity.
Modern Silverado
The current generation Silverado debuted in 2019. Highlights include: segment-exclusive power tailgate and bed-mounted 120-volt power outlet, best-in-class standard torque from the TurboMax engine with 430 pound-feet, the only full-size pickup capable of hands-free trailering with available Super Cruise driver assistance technology, most functional bed in the segment, including available MultiFlex tailgate and a lot more.
And this year we got the, developed from the ground up, Silverado EV. It comes with up to 492 miles of range. More than any other electric truck. It offers four-wheel steer with Sidewinder diagonal-driving capability. Up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity. And it has the segment-exclusive Mid-Gate. After 50 years, the Silverado is showing no signs of slowing down.
