GM has discovered that some 2025-2026 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 3500HD models are stalling and showing there’s no fuel even when there is.

While we see our fair share of headline-grabbing recalls and even investigations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are generally always a lot of service bulletins issued when automakers like General Motors discover teething problems that may not justify a recall. Sometimes, these service bulletins are issued with no clear fix for the problem, too – and that’s the case with this new action covering a mysterious issue with select 2025-2026 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 3500HD trucks.

In this case, the impacted trucks are 2025-2026 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 3500HD chassis cab models equipped with the 6.8-liter L8T gas V8, which is listed under RPO code N2N and comes standard with dual fuel tanks – one in the front and one in the rear, with a total capacity of 63.5 gallons. Trouble is, these trucks could stall when their fuel gauges show empty, and yet, still have adequate fuel left in the rear tank, specifically, according to GM Service Bulletin PIT6467A.

The SB itself states that these impacted trucks can run out of gas with the gauge indicating there is still fuel in the tank, adding that the fuel gauge may default to empty, but there is still fuel in the rear tank. It states that the SES MIL light may illuminate, albeit, with no impact on the vehicle’s drivability. Trouble is, GM also apparently doesn’t know exactly what’s causing this issue to occur, though it does have one suspicion.

The potential culprit could be the fact that the rear tank is not transferring fuel to the front tank in some cases, which would provide us with a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why the trucks are stalling out. It seems as if the front tanks are running out of fuel, but even with plenty left in the rear tank, the system just isn’t working the way that it was designed to, for reasons currently unknown.

For now at least, GM is instructing dealers to not replace any parts at this time while it investigates the matter. It plans to either update this information when it learns more, or replace the SB with a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) once the automaker figures out the root cause. In any event, it’s worth noting that GM faced this same issue in 2024, in that case, with certain Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 3500HD trucks equipped with the 6.6-liter L5P Duramax diesel.
