2019 Chevrolet Silverado Diesel Spotted Testing in Death Valley
Latest spy shots seem to confirm that Chevy will build a half ton Silverado diesel to compete with Ford and Dodge.
2019 Silverado mules have been running around GM’s proving grounds for months now. So far, we’ve got some clues as to what it will look like. But what we don’t have are any concrete powertrain details. However, we now know that Chevy’s latest and greatest half ton pickup is going to burn more than regular gasoline. Because thanks to some spy shots Off-Road recently tweeted out to the world, we have confirmation that Chevrolet is indeed testing a Silverado diesel.

The diesel sipping Chevy was spotted fueling up at a gas station near Death Valley National Park in east California. It sports virtually identical camo to the Silverado mule we last saw in May, but this one is being fueled up with a green handled diesel pump. One of the engineers in the truck even filled up a yellow canister, typically reserved for diesel fuel, after topping off the truck. Just in case they ran dry in the desert, we presume.

What we don’t know is what sort of diesel engine Chevy will put under the hood of the production Silverado. Off-Road points to rumors that it could be a 4.5 liter V6. But Chevy could also choose to simply source the 2.8 liter Duramax four cylinder currently used in the Colorado. Either way, it’s an obvious and much needed move if Chevy wants to compete with the existing RAM EcoDiesel and Ford’s forthcoming F-150 diesel.
