Crazy Clip o’ the Week: Silverado SS Cooks Up Some Smoky Donuts

By -

Modified Chevy truck spends 70 seconds roasting its rear tires, and it’s just as badass as you’d think it would be!

The 2003-2005 Chevrolet Silverado SS was arguably the greatest GM performance truck ever while also being one of the greatest American performance trucks of all time. With the 6.0L V8 delivering 345 horsepower and 380lb-ft of torque, the Silverado SS offered impressive performance capabilities and awesome tire-smoking abilities, which are on display in the video above.

This Chevrolet Silverado SS burnout and donut video was posted online by YouTube user WenG, and while there are no real details on this truck, we can see that it is not a stock Silverado SS. Most notably, this Chevy truck is much lower than the production SS pickups, but it also sounds a bit healthier than the average fresh-from-the-showroom 2003-2005 Silverado. It definitely has an exhaust system which allows the 6.0L V8 to breathe a little easier and in the comments, many viewers speculate that likely has other power-adding modifications. It should also be noted that some commenters suggest that it is a Silverado SS clone and not an actual production SS, but there is no question that it looks and acts like a proper SS.

Speculation aside, there is no question that the Silverado SS packs plenty of power to keep the rear tires spinning hard for the majority of the video. The tires aren’t always smoking a ton, but the driver of this Chevy sport truck keeps the wheels spinning as he whips the rear end out over and over. At times, the truck’s forward (and sideways) progress slows, creating far more smoke, but after each blast of smoke, the driver throws the truck into another tight turn as the engine screams.

The video ends with the Silverado SS sliding to a stop in front of a long row of trucks with a cloud of smoke accumulating around the rear end, serving as the perfect end to this donut video.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
