Baby Driver‘s Badass Scene Stealer: The Chevy Avalanche

By -

We don’t condone driving like this in your own Chevy truck, but this scene is a good representation of just how great the GMT900 chassis is.

Despite the somewhat odd choice of name, Baby Driver is, without a doubt, one of the greatest heist/chase genre films we’ve seen since the Pacino/DeNiro classic Heat. It’s got a delightful cast of characters, a wonderfully integral soundtrack, and uses cars in a unique and interesting way. Where most films of this type have a “hero car,” Baby Driver uses a number of different vehicles depending upon the needs of the day. When you’re transporting a practiced team of high-stakes thieves, sometimes you need something fast, sometimes you need something heavy and strong. With each new driving scene, the getaway driver (whose name is “Baby,” as it happens) will simply steal whatever car fits the bill and happens to be nearby.

In one of our favorite scenes, a GMT900-chassis Chevrolet Avalanche fits the bill for an endurance chase on the highway. In what was supposed to be a by-the-book grab-the-money-and-run type of heist, something goes awry. The protagonistic team in the full-sized Chevy truck is chased down by a bank security agent in an old Dodge Ram. We won’t spoil how the scene ends, but based solely on the screen captures of the international trailer (above) you can see that the truck gets full on sideways underneath a tractor trailer on the highway at speed.

Obviously, we don’t condone driving like this in your own Chevy truck — and we certainly don’t condone participating in a bank heist! — but this scene is a reasonably accurate representation of how great the GMT900 chassis is. Just like an old Timex watch, this truck takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

As for the film itself, we were hooked from the very first scene. We recommend you go check it out this weekend.
