Chevy Aims to Expand Performance RST Lineup
With the Tahoe RST selling like hot cakes, Chevy might expand their performance package to other trucks and SUVs.
When Chevy first announced that they were going to offer a high performance version of the full-size Tahoe SUV, we were intrigued. Intrigued not only by their attempt to shed the image that SUVs are soccer mom rides, mind you. We were also curious to see how well it would sell. And now we’ve got our answer, courtesy of Chevy truck marketing director Sandor Piszar.
“It’s selling like gangbusters,” Piszar told Automotive News recently. “It’s turning in about eight days. We cannot build them fast enough.” So maybe people are interested in more than just hauling kids and groceries in their ‘utes after all. Because it appears that there is in fact a market for trucks like the Tahoe RST. Trucks that look and drive a little more like sports cars than mall crawlers.
Of course, we’re not surprised that anyone would levitate toward the RST and its attractive combination of blacked out and body color trim. But with a 6.2-liter V8, Magnetic Ride Control, and the availability of things like Borla exhaust and a high-performance brake package, Chevy is conjuring up the ghosts of hot SUVs from the past. Bygone relics like the incredible GMC Typhoon.
The most interesting part of Piszar’s conversation with Automotive News, however, is the revelation that Chevy “could expand the RST package from full-size SUVs to other light trucks.” He declined to share specifics on what those new models might consist of. But with Chevy showing off the Silverado Performance Concept recently, the full-size pickup seems like an obvious candidate for the RST treatment.
Perhaps it’s too early to call this a performance truck renaissance. But that won’t stop us from getting excited over future hi-po Chevy products!
