New Chevrolet Silverado is Easier and Cheaper to Repair
While Ford is busy trying to find new ways to make trucks that are more complicated and expensive with turbo engine and aluminum bodies, Chevrolet is busy reminding people what makes a truck great. A truck needs to be rugged, dependable and have enough power underhood to get the job done. Since all trucks are subjected to excessive abuse, it needs to be easy to repair when necessary.
Chevy is keen on demonstrating that last part with a new look at how the truck was created and designed in such a way that collision repair would be easy and cheap. The frame rails have been built and designed to alloy for a sectional cut and weld to replace bent sections after an accident, rather than replacing the whole frame. Another interesting move includes a front fender that includes both inner structural support and outer skin combined. This means no cutting, drilling or welding required if the support under the fender is damaged. The roof panels, doors, cab, and bed have all been designed in smart ways like this. Sure Ford may be making their new trucks out of Aluminum to cut weight and save gas, but how much of that gas savings goes out the window when it comes times to have a repair made to that fancy alloy body? You can check out all the cool design touches on the Silverado in the handy infographic Chevy created.
