NHRA Chevy Dragster Salutes California Cops, Promotes Highway Safety

It’s safe to say that if you spot famed funny car driver Robert Hight‘s new California Highway Patrol (CHP)-themed Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car in your rear view mirror, you might as well pull over. The former National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car Champion revealed his new ride this week as racing season gets ready to kick off. And Autoweek was there to get the story.

The Camaro makes its debut this weekend at Southern California’s NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, which began Thursday and is running through Feb. 12. In addition to the Pomona race, the CHP-themed Chevy Camaro will return in November for the Auto Club NHRA Finals.

The idea behind the CHP theme is to bring awareness to California’s Move Over Law. The law requires drivers to move over to the left or slow down when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road and its flashing lights are on. All 50 states employ some sort of Move Over Law, all of which aim to save lives and protect first-responders.

Unlike the Camaro, the partnership between the Auto Club of Southern California and the California Highway Patrol is nothing new. And to expound upon that relationship, this year marks the beginning of the NHRA Salutes First Responders program. The program aims to pay tribute to all first responders.
