Upcoming facelift for the 2022 Silverado clearest sign yet the electric revolution won’t push aside gas, diesel models in the near term.

April 7, 2021 will go down as the day Chevy swung its heaviest hammer in the direction of every EV truck maker around. Coming soon out of the Factory ZERO line with the GMC Hummer lineup will be the Silverado-E.

Built upon the same Ultium platform as the Hummers, the new Silverado will be Chevy’s first EV truck. Though little is known thus far, it’s a big sign GM’s ready to battle serious competition (Ford’s electric F-150) and total jokes (Tesla’s Cybertruck) alike. However, those who still want to fill the tanks of their trucks with gas or diesel won’t have anything to worry about. According to CarBuzz, Chevy’s still putting energy into the Silverado overall.

The ICE Won’t Be Put on Ice Yet

“You might be wondering what this announcement means for our current Silverado on the road and in showrooms today,” said Chevy Comms lead Kyle Suba. “To confirm, it does not impact our current Silverado and commitment to ICEs (internal combustion engines) in the near term. We have significant updates in terms of design and capability coming very soon, which we will announce later this year.”

That update is expected for the 2022 model year, according to CarBuzz. The current Silverado arrived in 2019, and will likely see a total refresh in its design and offerings. It only makes sense to do this before the Silverado-E lands in the showroom. Even if we don’t yet know what it looks like thus far.

The Electric Future Awaits, However

“Chevrolet will continue to offer today’s loyal truck customers new features, trims, and technologies,” Suba said, “while simultaneously growing the Silverado franchise with a compelling all-electric truck.”

The Silverado-E will likely appear by 2025. This happens to be the same year GM plans to have 30 EVs in the overall portfolio. Meanwhile, gas- and diesel-powered models won’t be going anywhere any time soon. Of course, such models may be the last of their kind, as GM plans to be fully electric by 2035. We suspect the last ride for petroleum won’t be until the 2030s, though. Until then, traditional Silverado buyers can still roll on.
