Stadium Super Trucks may be the strangest series at Long Beach, but it’s also arguably the most fun to watch.

The Stadium Super Trucks series is one that rarely fails to entertain, at the very least, largely because, well, they’re quite the opposite of those famous open-wheeled racers and prototypes that roam places like the Acura Long Beach Grand Prix. Rather, Stadium Super Trucks (SST) are known for sliding around corners with at least one tire lifted in the air, jumping over ramps in the road and other obstacles, and just downright putting on a thrilling show. That was certainly true at the 2024 Long Beach Grand Prix, where we here at Chevrolet Forum were able to soak in this entertaining race live and in person.

Long Beach provides its own unique challenges for more traditional racers given the fact that it’s a tight city course by nature, but when you throw SSTs in there, well, it’s even more daunting. After all, who doesn’t want to watch what is essentially an off-road race on the tarmac in tight confines? Once again, this years Long Beach SST races didn’t disappoint, and once again, it was a pair of familiar names that occupied the first couple of spots in the first race of the weekend.

As was the case in 2022, Max Gordon won the first race of the 2024 SST race at Long Beach, with his father, Robby Gordon, coming in second place. Amazingly, the younger Gordon started the race in eighth, but it only took him three laps to gain the lead – after which he never looked back. However, his father did have to battle three-time champ Matt Brabham for second in a heated affair that went right down to the final lap.

Sadly, race number two didn’t quite go as planned, as just four laps in, Zoey Edenholm made contact with Max and went airborne before crashing into a fence and damaging it on just the fourth lap. Officials were able to repair the fence in time for the weekend’s concluding GT race, but unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough time to finish up the SST race. The whole thing went down after Edenholm rotated mid-air and landed sideways, crossing Gordon’s path, at which point neither driver had time to react.

Luckily, neither driver was injured in the mixup, and Gordon continued with no hood or functioning brakes before smacking into a barrier himself. Since the race couldn’t continue, Myles Cheek was declared the winner – the very first SST victory of his career – with Matt Brabham and Bill Hynes behind him. This resulted in an overall weekend win for Brabham, however, thanks to his pair of second-place finishes. He’s also now just four points behind Max in the championship race, with the next event on the docket still yet to be announced for June.
