Default 1990 K1500 fuel filter change - fuel spillage

Changed fuel filter today. One strange thing when I removed the fuel filter. I expected some residual fuel to run out the lines...normal right?
Well I put a drain pan under the fuel run out and walk away for about 20 minutes for lunch and come back to the garage and there is gasoline ALL OVER the floor!
And still coming out. I install the filter as quickly as I can to stop to run out. It easily expelled 2 to 4 gallons while fuel line was open.

Not normal right?

Normal, you opened the gas tank up to atmosphere, it will gravity drain through the 1/2 inch line wih the only thing slowing the leak down is using the line as a vent. Noe, if you would have pulled off the gas cap, you have dumped the gas from the can in a shorter amount of time.

Let me try this again, Normal, you opened the gas tank up to atmosphere, it will gravity drain through the 1/2 inch line with the only thing slowing the leak down is using the line as a vent. Now, if you would have pulled off the gas cap, you have dumped the gas from the tank in a shorter amount of time.

Yes, fire extinguisher is present. I just found it odd, because I changed the filter about 2 years ago and only remember a few ounces dribbling out.

With that, did you pull the fuel filter out completley?

Yes, removed the filter and installed new. I did this not even 2 years ago and only lost a few ounces of gasoline.

I'll bet the last last time you slapped the new filter in right away, vs walking away for 20 minutes
