Default 1998 C1500 buzzing in the radio

Good morning,

I have a 1998 C1500 with a 5.7L. Truck has stock (non bose) am/fm/cassette w/ slave in dash CD player. With the engine off (in accessory or RUN position) the radio works fine. With the engine running there is a buzzing noise in FM that increases with RPMs. Also the slave CD player works fine without the engine running, but when running it skips all over the place. (even just sitting still.) I shot the parts cannon at it, and put a new delco alternator in the truck. the problem still persists with no change. anybody have anymore ideas? Thanks

I mean, I’m not by any means technologically adept but... who listens to CD’s anymore!? I haven’t looked through my collection in at least 15 years.

It probably skips because it’s 22 years old and worn out, as well as has a lot of dust build up inside of it. You can try taking it out of the dash, removing the covers and cleaning it using keyboard duster, but don’t hope for any miracles.

If you’re set on keeping the factory radio, you could also take it to a radio/electronics repair shop. Any good repair service would be able to replace internal components that could affect player quality. They could also add a noise suppression resistor to stop the buzz/feed back through the speakers.

Other than adding a noise suppression resistor, start checking and cleaning grounds under the dash. They’re scattered, on the firewall and on the metal framework supporting the dash. The radio in particular grounds at the left end of the dash. There’s also signal shielding (similar to aluminum foil) wrapped around the radio harness - the ground wire for that may be damaged so inspect it he harness for signs of rubbing/chafing.

I don't use the CD player much. I just mentioned the issue with it, as both the fm and CD seem to only have issue with the engine running. I will check the grounds. Thanks

I did see someone has improperly routed the fm antenna wire behind the coolant bottle instead of up thru the fender. Ill fix that too.

Ended up being the cap and rotor. I made the mistake of buying delco, from amazon (a year ago,) Must've been bad right from the start. I replaced them with Delphi parts and the noise is gone.
