Default 98 K1500 fuel pump replacement question

I need to replace the fuel pump on my 1998 Silverado K1500 stepside truck. Is it easier to drop the tank or unbolt the pick-up box and slide it back? Also I see you can buy a pump rebuild kit or a whole new sending unit and pump assembly. I'm not sure which is the best way to go. My fuel guage is working OK. I've never changed one of these so I was looking for some advice.

you can do it either way you prefer,i have done it both ways.if you can get the box off easy and slide it back just enough to lift it up out of the way.then you will have easy acess to your fuel pump module.if the box comes off easy then thats the way i would go.

Which ever way you do it, do not buy a cheap aftermarket pump. They usually don't last and you will be replacing it again shortly. Buy either an AC Delco or Delphi pump. With the work involved it doesn't pay to buy the cheap ones.

I just watched a youtube video where the guy unbolted one side of the box and propped it up with a 2x4 piece. It looked like a pretty good method. I think I'm going to give this a shot. Thanks for the reply.

I've got a Carquest store close by. Was planning on getting the new pump through them.
