Default Brake issues, Midas says maybe ABS?

Hey y'all, I have a 97 k1500 5.7 4WD. A year ago I had fantastic brakes .Tight as can be. One day they started to screw up on me, I would hit them and the truck would slow down then jerk forward, etc. Eventually they gave out completely. (For sure a brake issue). Took it to mechanic, he said he 'fixed it'. Got it back with VERY spongy brakes. It will stop but you have to push almost completely to the floor. He said he replaced vacuum and MC, and then he tried convincing me this much travel was normal. LOL
Fast forward to this year, took it to MIDAS, they have no idea. Brakes are bled, everything checks out according to them. They think it may be abs module.
Brakes pump up to being tight when off, then drop to floor when started. Vacuum Booster or ABS module? Maybe bench bleed MC? Any ideas?
Also, no codes showing on my OBDII (one about powertrain but that's another issue I'm working on), no abs or service engine light on dash either.

This mechanic didn't even road test the vehicle after he messed with the brake system? I would not use him again. Spongy brakes have air in them. Yeah might be the M/C or the ABS module on an older vehicle like yours.

what kind of rear brakes? if its rear rotors...do the calipers incorporate a parking brake mechanism? broken ratchet mechanisms will cause the caliper to retract to far...so they have to move far to apply...= a lot of pedal movement to move all that fluid.

if its drum brakes and you have a deep pedal...the rear brakes have to be adjusted properly...2 slack and the wheel cylinders have to move a lot of fluid to make the shoes contact the drum...which translated to pedal movement.
