Default Need to swap L05 but need compatable options?

Hey. I got a 1990 K2500, 5.7L, L05 engine that needs swapping. I have found a few engine blocks nearby me but none are exactly the same (L05) and I am not experienced enough to do a lot of intricate remodeling to fit alternative engines. I understand the L05 and it's swirly port heads are sucky too.
Anyway the block is the problem on my engine so if I have to I can reuse the head and intake which are in o.k. shape.

One of the leads I have for a cheapo new block is the old school 3970010 4-bolt block, came from a 1971 c10.
But since I am not super experienced in the language I cannot understand how to know what parts will be pretty easily interchangable for my truck. There are other options locally for cheap but the same problem -- not sure what will work.

Will try to translate some of my main non-knowledges:
-Does the transmission hookup need work whenever you change engine types?
-If I get an engine casting number, how do I find out it's "name" (L05, L98, etc)
-Is it dumb to put an engine from a K1500 into my K2500? Or from something else less weighted?
- (More to come)

If I do find essentially the same stock block as my 350 what heads can I put on the L05 block that don't suck as much as the swirly ports and also don't require a ton of rewiring, etc?

Nothing special about the 5.7 L05, unless its a "police special". The 1971 350 Chevy v8 was rated at 40 more HP in fact. Issue is that you have a 1990 with TBI and an ECM to contend with, not a points ignition system and a carburetor. K-1500 or 2500 has no bearing at all as to the motor itself. Just be glad you dont have the 1990
5.0 liter. What an outright DOG that motor is/was. The 1990 5.7 liter had more HP and got better or at least the same gas mileage as the 5.0 liter, back then.

Yeah, I'd take the 4.3 liter over a 1990 305 C-I any day of the week. The Vortec 4.3 liter was rated up to 200 HP on some Chevrolet vehicles.

i have the tbi 4.3 in my 94. she will scoot even with 257k miles on her. one of these days ill pull that out and put in a 350 tbi. if you have the ac on with the 4.3 she doesnt want to keep up at highway speeds and is always kicking the trans down one gear to get back to speed then will drop back down. have to go 73+ to keep her at a steady speed
