I'm getting ready to replace the transmission in my 1994 Chevy K1500 this week... This will be my first transmission, so if anyone has a solid step by step plan or just any tips in general I would greatly appreciate it. The tranny is an automatic 4L60E and it is 4x4. Thanks

I don't know if you will need to or not since I haven't ever replaced a transmission, but since these trucks have torsion bar independent front suspension you may need to remove the crossmember that the torsion bars connect to, if it is in your way. Other than that I cant think of anything that is special about replacing one of those transmissions. I am assuming its a pretty heavy transmission so I would recommend a jack to help I down. Also I think you might have to support the back of the engine. I am no expert but those are some ideas that come to mind.

Make sure the converter is fully seated, you should not be able to get a finger between it and the bellhousing. You have to seal between the trans and the transfercase, either using the factory style paper gasket or gasket maker.

flush the trans lines and cooler. you don't want any debris from a failed trans going into the new trans. cooler can trap debris and when they get up to operating temp the debris flows into out. depth filters don't get everything.

@tech2 Agreed, after a transmission replacement is also the best time to replace or add a trans cooler if needed, because it is a good time to start fresh. Also while I am thinking, if you have a leaking rear main seal, now is a good time to replace it since you will already have the transmission out.
