Let me start off by saying I don't know much about Gm products have not worked on many. I am working on my neighbors 2001 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L 220k miles he has had this thing since new and has put tons of money in it over the years besides some rocker rot its in relatively good shape. The other day he was at a light went to go and heard a pop truck lost reverse sounds like your trying to put a manual trans in gear without the clutch and when you put it in drive truck moves but sounds terrible. What I am trying to determine is if this is a trans or tcase issue I had it up on jack stands I can spin the tires a bit when its in park and hear it sounds like a stripped gear. Another odd thing still on jack stands when truck is in park i hit the gas both wheels spin a little and it grinds and when its in N same thing grinds and wheels spin a bit.

The stock sun shells in the 4L60Es' are notoriously weak and usually when you lose reverse with some grinding, that's the culprit but if the wheels spin in Park the parking pawl may be broken and a chunk took out the sun shell. Rebuild the transmission imo.

Ok thanks figured it was shot just wanted to make sure before I told him to dump it trucks rly not worth enough to warrant putting a trans in tbh.
