Default ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Questions

I have 2001 Silverado 1500 p/u. I just acquired the truck and a code went off. The code mentioned missing the ABS Speed Sensor on both right and left sides. Can someone please explain the need for these and what they are? Could these be part of the truck when new and then be removed thus both sides being removed? Should they be replaced? Thanks!

Without these your ABS will not work. A first step would be to remove them and clean them. Also check the wiring for good connections and make sure there are no broken wires. Just replacing or cleaning the sensors doesn't mean the ABS will start to work again. There may be other problems.

The speed sensors are not there. How and where do these attach? Easy fix?

Make sure the plug that the sensors plug into are still there and not cut off.
