I'm upgrading my 06 silverado foam steering wheel to a leather wrapped wheel. I'd also like to upgrade my airbag as well. Any of you switch out the basic airbag to a nicer design? I was looking at the bag from a Trailblazer and from my research it seems it will fit. Have any of you done this and if so what did you use? Pictured here is what I'd ike to use. This is what I'm thinking about using.
I would be very cautious about swapping air bags. They are designed for specific applications - cabin space, adjustment ranges for the seat and steering wheel/column, and other factors all affect air bag manufacturing. The same size air bag can be used in different vehicles, but the amount of gas used to inflate them will vary depending on if it’s a truck or car/SUV.
The air bag from the trailblazer may bolt in place but that doesn’t mean it will properly protect you if needed.
It could also have different electrical connections than the Silverado.
There’s also the deployment loops - they can also be different depending upon application. The SIR module measures the resistance of the deployment loops at key on, and if the replacement air bag has different resistance than the original, the air bag light may be on all the time and the SIR may not even deploy it if needed.
I would do as much research as possible to be absolutely sure the air bag you want will work. Don’t just go by the info from the company selling it - get a current GM part# and verify the replacement is correct.
