Sadly, my father-in-law can't drive anymore. Rather than sell is beloved truck, he gave it to me. It as a 5.3, excellent interior, great original paint and body, has some rocker rust. The engine has 172K and has been well maintained. The A/C unit may have a leak and I need to get it aligned - besides that, it runs, shifts and handles great.

 

The old girl probably still has lots of life left in her. My 2004 has 136k (also a 5.3L, but 2wd) and a friend of mine has a 2002 Z71 with about 250,000 miles.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance!!

 

My recently aquired 00 z-71ish has no apparent rust yet, but it's been repainted and as with most vehicles here in Hicksville, it's got hail dents galore. But the dang thing runs like a top. It pulls our pontoon boat with ease, and I can't wait till we get some snow to put the 4x4 thru is paces and see what else I need to fix. Drivers side shaft needs replaced, but they are cheap enough. It's got just over 190k on the clock, and I expect it to lay me over 250k before I have to worry about replacing the motor and trans.

Mines a bit of an oddity apparently, I've got the z71 rpo codes, except the g80. So, no locky diff for me.

 

Thanks for the responses. Sadly enough, my father-in-law Herman passed away this past Monday at home, in his chair watching TV (can't go better than that). His sister had tried to talk him into selling it the past few years, since he couldn't drive, and he would lose his mind - all of as sudden, he wanted to give it me because "John will appreciate it" and he passed about a week after giving it to me - I think he knew he was leaving us. His name was Herman, so I plan on rebuilding the motor and tranny, fix the u-joints, AC and a few other things and it will be in my garage in his memory, I'll call it "The Herminator".


The women folk don't understand "why anyone would love an old truck", they don't get it. The truck he had before this was a late 70's model GMC 4x4, he put over 300k on it before rebuilding it and then sold it for this one.
