Exclamation Steering column Shaft

Just changed my steering shaft bearing due to a rattle. The shaft that is inside the metal column slides in and out easily. I'm not referring to the intermediate shaft, but the actual shaft the runs through the bearing. All the videos I saw show this shaft as being fixed, but mine slides in and out of the metal steering column under the dash. Anyone have this issue when they changed their bearing? My concern is that I think this should not be happening and don't want to roll the dice with a steering part. Attached is the picture of the metal steering column and the shaft that extends/collapses is inside.
