Default Sudden Loss of Power- '01 5.3L Silverado

Hello All,

My 2001 Silverado LS 5.3L with 153,000 miles has been experiencing a sudden stall when I press the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. It only happens while the truck is in Drive. The volt meter bounces from 14 to 11-12 and the motor stalls. Here is what I have looked at so far:

- Engine idles in Park and in Drive at 400-500 RPMs.
- My battery holds a charge and is less than 2 years old.
- Battery connections are snug and there is no corrosion on my battery cables.
- When I am in Drive and am coming to a stop, as soon as my RPM's fall to 500, my volt meter bounces from 14 to 11-12 and boom..... motor stalls. If I stay in Drive and stop fully at a red light, I have to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep my RPM's over 500 or the motor stalls.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't really have any knowledge and do not have the tools to handle this myself. I'm hoping I can get some insight BEFORE I take it to a mechanic. Thanks!

Brian

I'd check the alternator first. Might be a low RPM its not working properly. Also, check the battery. Lots of them are crudddy Chinese junk that wont last long.

Thank you. My battery is a Duralast from Costco.

Well going by that info your battery is on the very low side at 11.7 volts, since its 12 volts.most of the batteries I have had would be 12.5 volts cold. It sounds like your alternator is working good at 14.5 volts however. I think you need a new battery.Hopefully it has some warranty left so it wont cost you as much money.

Time for a new battery. I assume you mean engine off when you posted Battery Cold - 11.7 volts. A good fully charged battery should measure 12.6 volts with the engine not running. Anything less is a incomplete or undercharged battery. At 11.5 volts it would be discharged by 50%.

before you replace anything get it tested. ive tested batteries before and as long as theyre above 10.8v they can be tested, most times a trickle charge is all they need. i had a battery in my 02 that i got used back in 2005 and i traded the truck in just last year. it was "dead" when the original owner brought it into autozone and used it as a core. i trickle charged it and it never let me down
