Tail Pipe Smoke on start-up (Solved)
Hello,
2006 5.3l 284k tail pipe smoke on engine start in mornings.
At first it was thought the valve seals was the cause. Replace valve seals, no change.
Did more Google searches, went way down the list.
Found a GM tech bulletin stating that high mileage engines or poor oil maintenance could cause the baffle drain holes in the driver side valve cover to clog. Thus oil could pool inside the baffle and be drawn into the intake manifold through the PCV hose and coat the inside of the plenum. Then overnight, the oil on the inside walls of the plenum would seep down and build up for the next engine start.
The GM tech bulletin was not a recall, and that a the driver side valve cover baffle was redesigned to avoid clogging baffle drain holes.
I purchased a new driver side valve cover from GM instead of trusting that third party manufactures have also made modifications.
Problem solved.
