- Chevrolet Silverado GMT900 How does AFM Work
Step by step instructions for do-it-yourself repairs.
2008 5.3l AFM "Blown" Lifters & Camshaft $$$$
I just bought a 2008 Suburban LTZ with 130,000 miles. On the ride home I got the Engine Warning light, and the Service Stabilitrac & Traction Control. The engine ran badly and I took it back the next day. CarMax has replaced the lifters, etc. in the affected cylinder. I went to pick it up and I still hear a tapping when the engine runs so I left it with them to check again. Should I return this truck or will it likely be ok once it is serviced? I suspect any other cylinder could go at any time leaving me with the $1,800 bill.
I don't know what it cost you but if you could, I would take it back and get another. The 2014's are a year old and they are an entirely different vehicle. Also the Chevy dealers are making deals like crazy just to get customers away from the older models. Even some of the later used ones are getting $5-9K discounts and also some 0% financing too. Good luck whichever way you choose to go. Oh I forgot, copy 2-3 pages of the posts on this forum and take them with you.

Just read though this post and look on the internet.
Need a NEW ENGINE SOON.
Do not know what policy you have in your state.
That truck has cancer. DUMP IT.
Just my thinking. It is hopeless without a new engine.
Just heard on the radio that warranty has been reduced to 60K miles from 100K. Official story is that it's in line with other truck mftrs. Could be expense to repair poorly engineered afm engines is too high.
Also just read that FIAT is willing to negotiate a combination with GM. Put a hemi in the silverado please.
In 2012, at 109k on odometer, I received the exact same messages (Stabilitrak and Traction Control), and truck ran very rough, especially at low speeds - and also shifted very rough. Diagnosis: normal compression (175) in all cylinders except for 1, failed lifter in Cylinder 1, replace all lifters in bank. This set me back $1900. Like a fool, I did not check this forum at/about that time, and opted not to do the other bank for another $600 at the time.
Fast forward to 2015, 145k on odometer - at beginning of a 450 mile trip - same symptoms. Thankfully it drove OK from 65-75. Once home, plugged it in to find code CO304 (cylinder misfire, cylinder 4), pulled cylinder 4 plug - it was horribly fouled and caked with oil, and compression test showed about 70PSI, versus 175 in all other cylinders. Another failed lifter, this time on the right (even) bank - and another $2100.
I looked into converting from AFM to non-AFM and my dealership had never done this, and were not excited about doing so...
So...about $4k later, I Have a new(er) set of lifters, new head gasket, intake manifold gasket, plugs and wires...so...hoping I'll get through another 2 years on this.
So much for AFM vehicles in this house...$4k is a ton of fuel savings---which, I don't think I am getting anyway. UGH.

cehelin Welcome to the forum, thank you for the update on your situation... Yeah all the savings touted with the AFM in fuel are pretty much gone in an instant when you have to pay $5,000 in repairs....
Ok so i know this is an older thread. I will give u the skinny on this engine. Its is very poorly built. I own a shop in Ontario Canada. I would say everyone that is out of warranty sell ur truck. I work on 2 a month for lifters and cams. Gm is telling people to pound pavement when it out of warranty. If u have extended warranty then it will get covered. Gm told me that i am using the wrong engine oil in my customers trucks. If they look where i buy my engine oil they would see i buy it from the dealer cause its the best price. Dexos is the oil they require. Why would i go somewhere else to buy the oil when the dealer is the best bang for my buck. I have customers that use amsoil moble full syn. Change every 5000 km and still they blow up. I own a 2004 avalanche with the 5.3 and have about 345000km on it and not a noise or a problem. With all the problems with gm cars and trucks. Yes there cars are having major engine oil burning problems. I would strongly recommend on ford or dodge. There truck last with fewer problems. I work on them all. Alot of my gm customers where selling there gm to buy ford or dodge. Here is a little back round on me. I worked for a dealer in brampton for 11 years. I did the gm asep program. Then i left to open my own shop. 6 years ago. I left because( could be the dealer i worked for)or the fact that gm was hosing people for poor design. Lets look at the 3.1,3.4 l engine for intake problems. The cadillac engine with the timing chains. I love my avalanche would love to get a newer one but it not worth the problems that i see. Next truck ford f150. Come in for regular maintenance and run to 400000 km.
Thats my 2 cents on this issue.

I have a Dodge RAM and my son a Ford F150 - both excellent trucks with great engines. Those two, plus the Toyota Tundra, are the trucks to buy in 2015!
