My father works for a cellphone company and bought it from them about 5 years ago, we both used it to haul trailers all over and haul tons of loads, its got 230k on it and the transmission finally went, so my father went and bought another one from the company for cheap and gave me a smokin deal on this one. I have some mechanical experience, replaced a few engines and transmissions, but im wondering what the cheapest route would be to fix this truck. Im not even 100% sure what transmission is in it, I think it would be the 6l80 if someone can shed some light there. Should I find a used one, buy a reman, or is it possible to rebuild the trans? Will be doing the work myself. Thanks in advance.

If you’re capable of swapping an engine or transmission, you’re capable of rebuilding one. A good tech manual would give you a step by step walkthrough. The problem is there’s often a lot of special tools necessary for it, so the question is do you want to buy +/- $300 worth of special tools that you’ll probably only use once?
Your cheapest/easiest fix is to get one from a salvage yard, but you don’t really know what you’re getting and most salvage yards offer a 30 day guarantee if it’s bad. That usually means replacement with another trans only rather than a refund.
The next cheapest fix is to have it rebuilt by a transmission shop. Depending on the shop you’re looking at $2,000 - $3,000 but you’ll also have a warranty should something go wrong.
A reman unit is in the $3,000 - $5,000 range depending on who you get it from. You’ll also have a warranty but there’s a lot of room for argument (or special terms you must agree to) if you do the installation yourself.
The most likely cause of this transmission problem is a blown fuse or an open on circuit 1020 between the fuse panel and the transmission. If no battery voltage is found at the fuse, the ignition switch will need to be replaced

How could you know the source of the problem when all the OP said is the “transmission finally went”?
