Default 2011 Silverado and gasoline grade?

Hello all,

I have a 2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 WT 2WD 4.3L V6 OHV 12V for about 6 months.

So far I have been using ONLY Shell V-Power gasoline (93 octane). And I have been getting 19 mpg.

Three weeks ago I was refueling and on the other side of the pump a gentleman was doing the same. He also has 2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 WT 2WD 4.3L V6 OHV 12V, and started talking.

He told me that Regular gasoline (87 octane) is better for the Silverado, and trucks in general.

Next time I was refueling I refilled the talk all 26 gallons with regular gas ( Shell brand, I only buy Shell). And I reset the Average miles on Driver Information Center (How to install Driver Information Center (DIC) buttons on a GM Chevrolet GMT900 Silverado). And I have been getting between 21mpg.

Today I did the same and same thing, I'm getting 21mpg with regular Shell Gasoline (87 octane).

My questions for you guys are:

1. What engine does my Silverado have?
2. How come I get better mpg with 87 octane rather then 93 octane? Doesn't 93 octane gasoline require higher compression, therefore more power, therefore less gasoline needed to be used?
3. What gasoline would you suggest? I believe in the manual is specified that "regular gasoline must be used, minimum 87 octane". I thought using 93 will help make it better. t

Let me know your thoughts. I appreciate all your help.

Best regards,
Stefanely

octane is the resistance to burning higher octane means it takes more to combust which is part of the reason why using ethanol results its worse mileage. Higher octane fuels were usually used to help reduce engine pings or knocks due to premature detonation, in most cases on anything fuel injected that's not really an issue. When in doubt the owners manual is usually the best source.

higher octane fuel has less heat energy than lower octane fuel. if you do not have a high compression engine there is no need for it...as all racers in stock unmodified classes have found out...higher octane fuel makes you run slower.

complete waste of money to run higher octane fuel in your truck. Save this fuel for a high performance engine or something with boost.
