My 2009 sierra has been having the same problem. Starts up fine but eventually when your driving stabilitrak and traction control comes off and the rpm just drops to 0. When that happens it starts to drive rough and kick sometimes. Then it fights me trying to start up, it even stalled on me when it happens.

 

There are hundreds or thousands of things that trigger the check engine light. You need a diagnostic scan to see what your particular fault is.
