Default How to replace shift linkage bushing, 2009 Silverado

Here’s a video I made for a 2009 Chevy Silverado, my truck wouldn’t start because the gear was stuck in reverse, when I got under the truck I saw the shift linkage bushing gave out, I tried part number 14104 from autozone but that part only lasted a day. I then put in part number
615-1434 from Napa auto and this part has worked well, that is the red bushing seen in the video.

Good video.

I’ve had to deal with this issue on a few customer trucks and vans. My luck with the replacement bushings has been hit or miss regardless of who made them. I think it’s more a matter of how often the trans is being shifted into and out of park, such as with service vehicles.

GM has been producing cables with an updated design because of the bushings wearing out. If replacing the lower half of the cable, It’s recommended to replace the upper half as well. Some vehicles even get a replacement shift lever to attach to the transmission.

Looking at them side by side it’s difficult to tell what the difference is, so I suspect it’s just a matter of what materials they’re using on the new cables.
