Default Fuel filter, check engine light, won't start

Today, driving (Silverado 3500HD with the 6.6 Duramax) home from jobsite (50 miles). Everything was running just fine, check engine light comes on. 1/4 mile later I get a message ,"change/check fuel filter." About 1 mile later, I stop at a stop sign, engine dies, and won't start. Had it towed to the shop because I know it had to be worse than just a fuel filter needing changed since I only had about 2 mile warning. Mechanic said (worst case) he had seen this before and was pertty sure what the problem was. He then said something about when a pressure pump (or something) fails it sends metal shavings through my fuel system. I stopped listening carefully when I heard "metal shavings." Anyone else had this kind of failure or know anything about this kind of problem that will help educate me?

First off, if the pump fails to the point of due to cavitation and eats itself (that means it had zero fuel in the tank or plugged inlet to the fuel pump). The filter should pick up that debris, which might be the light you got. Replace the filter, I'd suggest open it up (hacksaw) see if it has metal in it, probably that, and a fuel pump.

the mechanic is referring to the diesel injection pump on the engine not the intank lift pump. the high pressure fuel pump is after the filter so if it grenades metal shaving from the pump can go into the injectors.
Its way to early to determine that is the fault based on the information provided and no diagnostics performed...but that would be a worst case scenario. hope this guy is a diesel tech cause a lot of general techs can't fix diesels.

The mechanic is the shops diesel tech, so I'm hopeful on that end. I'm still under warranty, but with what I heard, it sounded like the fix is quite extensive.

Default 2016 GMC Sierra Denali 6.6l diesel

Had the same problem my truck got a check engine turned on as I was driving and also a replacement of clogged fuel filter . So I made it to the side of the road and turn off my truck after that it wouldn’t turn on . So I took it in to the dealership and they told me my injection pump went out and metal shaving got in my fuel system .Now to repair it it’s costing me $12000.00. My warranty had just gone out anyone with this issue ?
