Default What is this for??

Hey everyone, i just came across something on my "new to me" 2016 that i dont understand its purpose. (see image) The opening/compartment above the 4WD selector. Is there a specific purpose or was this just busy work for a junior design engineer to give them something to do?? And why does it have a removeable square rubber cup like tray at the bottom??

Its not nearly big enough for a phone unless its one of the little ancient flip phones cause its not even big enough for a pack of cigarettes. A friend said he thought thats where the factory trailer brake controller goes, but he's not sure.

Sunglasses. That would explain the soft rubber. Check the owner's manual

I thought of that, but theres a sunglasses holder in the overhead console along with a spot for a garage open, so i dont think its that.

that is where the trailer brake control goes if it was equipped. So its just a compartment to put stuff.
