GM is recalling 1000's of new 2024 Silverados for a long crack in the roof, on the passenger side. Here is a link to the Chevrolet Forum article. Read the whole article, including links to the pictures and dealer repair instructions. Especially the horrible looking weld they show as an example. Honestly, that weld looks like it was done on the first day of beginning welding school. Chevy also recommends drilling a crack stop hole at each end of the crack, like they do in aircraft sheet metal cracks. The similarity ends there. In aircraft, they do NOT weld the crack after drilling the stop hole. GM instructs to drill the hole, and then weld it over. This is dumb, and does no good. Another question is this is a major repair, requiring welding, corrosion protection, and painting the entire roof panel. Will this repair go on CarFax? Will the dealers be required to disclose the repair? Will there be a price reduction? Special warrenty?
