Default 2002 astro van two issues

1) new starter still grinding upon starting Flywheel? shims? 2) died on my wife yesterday thought it was out of gas put gas in now it will crank but wont stay on more than a couple seconds. I think I can hear the pump kick on (over the stupid dinging sound) so I think the pump is working. acts like its not getting enough fuel. Crank sensor? Fuel pump? we have also had ongoing issues with fuel gauge all over the place.

Do a fuel pressure check. Just because you can hear the pump, doesn't mean it is producing enough pressure. Did you change the fuel filter? Fuel pressure regulator also a possibility.

checked it again this morning, now Im not hearing anything when I turn the key on, so pump may be bad Car has been operated a lot with little gas. My wife never puts gas in...I read where GM says less than 1/4 tank can ruin the fuel pump.
