Default 94 Astro ball joints

I'm replacing the lower ball joints on my Astro, and the bj press doesn't fit in the space to press them out. Do I have to compress the coil spring, and disassemble the lower control arm? If so, how in the world does the coil spring compressor tool fit on the spring that runs THROUGH the frame? Or can I take the tie rod and the steering knuckle off without having to fool with the spring and removing the lower control arm?
