Default astro won't crank over

i have a 98 astro that i just replaced the steering column on due to the fact it it had been busted from somebody trying to steal it once before. Basically the key wouldn't engage and litterally kept turning in a complete 360. so instead of paying the ridiculous amount that was wanted to fix it, i just got a whole column with everything on it for $85. this involved alot less work. atleast so i thought. Now the new column in place and hooked back up, but the starter won't crank over. I see the security light flashing and anti-lock light which is leading me to believe that the passlock needs to be reset. i have read on how to do this, but wouldn't the starter still turn over? i honestly didn't even think to disconnect the battery when installing. So my question is do i need to disconnect the battery to let my computer completely reset and then do the relearn process for the passlock? could this maybe be why it isn't cranking. i hear everything turning on, even the fuel pump kicks on.
