Default Transfer case

My 2000 Astro awd transfer case just ate itself and I'm wondering if I can just disconnect the transfer case from the tranny and drive it in 2wd. I need to get it to my mechanic about 1/2 mile away.

All I can know is that I felt something go and the next thing I'm hearing a sound like a can full o parts tumbling. Sounds like it's coming from transfer case. Does it in gear and rolling in neutral.
