Default 04 Avalanche message center

Hi, 2004 avalanche 1500 z66
this morning "service 4WD" message
i wasn't aware it was 4WD....thought 2 WD...anyone know about this?

If it’s actually 4WD, the control buttons for the transfer case will be just to the right of the headlight switch on the left end of the dash.

Typically the message indicates a fault with the electrical system for the 4WD. Common failures are the control buttons, transfer case encoder motor, front axle actuator, and the transfer case control module.

If it happened suddenly (like in the middle of a drive as opposed to when first starting), inspect the chassis wiring for damage and repair as needed.

If it’s not actually 4WD, it’s possible the cluster or PCM was swapped with one that came out of a 4WD. Further investigation would be required.

it happened when i started it this morning. i don't remember seeing any buttons except to turn on/off the lights inside the bed on walls.
i will look tonight. i do have papers that the cluster was replaced from previous owner, i am owner 2, 118k in 2000 when i bought, 149k now
