06 avalanche and the limp mode headache

06 avalanche and the limp mode headache
So, first post and based on a little research I'm dealing with a painfully common problem and could use some ideas
3rd gear starts, can manually shift through all gears. When car has been turned off for a bit, then back on it will run normally. Found this suggesting vss/pcm issues.
SES code p0785 shift solenoid malfunction.
So far I've replaced the A,B, 3-2 downshift, and filter. Disconnected the battery with the key in for 40 min or so to reset the system. Checked the ign and about 15 other fuses both under hood and in driver side panel.
after replacing the solenoids and driving, SES light turned off for a day and back on today.
Tested the old solenoids by powering them with a battery charger and blowing into one end of an air hose. Powered up, the solenoids closed. So not the problem.
im definitely figuring electrical but not entirely sure where to start though still researching.
