Program remote for DVD/RES

Program remote for DVD/RES
New to forum. Love my Avalanche.
I bought it used, and it didn't come with the remote control for the DVD/RES system. I had to buy a remote on ebay. Does anyone know the steps I need to take (or can direct me to them) in order to program the new remote to my system?
Any assistance is appreciated.

no programming required.....they all send the same infared signal
make sure there are batteries installed and that they are in correctly
also do not point the remote at the radio...point it at the overhead screen from the backseat

A friend who sells vans locally can sell me a remote (and yes he says a universal remote will work), but they have to be programmed at the dealer. It cost $80 for the programming. Is there a document in the GM repair manual or on their website to do this ? My vehicle is a 2003 Venture, but it's probably generic.
