Question 88 Camaro 305 cub.in., nervous idle speed, high HC at idle

Hi guys,
I'm having a hard time figuring out why I'm unable to get smooth idle if I'm adjusting the valves properly on my recently bought Camaro.
With the ignition timing set to 8 BTDC it runs nervously if I set the idle speed to 700-750 rpm, so now I have it set to 900-950 rpm, the HC is going through the roof, over 2000 in idle with 4.0 CO, but the HC drops to 500 at 2000 rpm.
First I checked the valve clearances while the engine was running in idle, what I noticed that as I was loosening the nuts, the engine started to run better. I checked all valves and at the end I got much smoother idle (but still far from being perfect), by looseing up all nuts to just after the clicking noise disappear compared to what it supposed to be, a 1/2 turn more clockwise.

I've got Edelbrock carb and intake manifold on the engine.

So, I'm wondering that maybe the camshaft in this engine is not a standard one but one of those specialized ones?

What do you guys think? How could I lower the idle speed, get decent HC value and smoothe and lower the idle at 700?
