If you want to build a motor I would go with the LS2, you can find the block pretty cheap and parts for the motor arent that expensive. Im wanting to swap out to the LS2 but I still have a lot of life left in my ls1, well see how it handles nitrous over the summer.
your 96 has an lt1... the best thing to do is build a 383 out of it....get the lt4 heads and cam and it will be a screamer.....you can just tune your computer to math your engine build.....it would b much easier than swaping in a ls1,ls6,ls2ls3 or any ls based engine which doesnt even have the same type motor mounts and youd have to switch wiring harness and ecu
