i used to have a similar problem in my 76 monte carlo. the guy who built it put a high performance motor with a stock tranny and rear end. and im talking torker 2 intake, 750 carb, performance heads, 270 comp cam, headers, roller rockers, msd, the works....but a stock tranny, torque converter, and rear end gears. the car wasnt nearly as fast as it couldve been, slow off the line and it topped out at around 80mph and thats with the high gears that stock montes came out with....terrible....i got rid of it
Don't think this author wants to not fix what's wrong and sell it.T/C or rear end gears he needs to take care not to get to valve float so he doesn't damage the engine.I suggest that is the important factor here.Need more info to help from him.

i was trying to get more info out of him but he has failed to respond. i wasnt suggesting that he just leave it alone and get rid of it.

Now here you said something interesting.Tune-up??.Look at the plug wires and cap in the dark with the air cleaner off so you can see easily. If you see any arching at all replace with delco parts only across the board. That would be plugs, wires, cap, rotor.Pull the cap off and look for arching that would look like pencil marks inside the cap.

Something is up with the trans or rear-end. 5500RPMs at 75 is outrageous. The best way to find your rearend ratio, jack it up, put it in neutral, and turn the driveshaft, see how many turns it takes to turn the tire 1 full rotation, that will be your gear ratio. EX: 3.73 turns of driveshaft. and 1 full turn on the tire= 3.73s.

But I think your trans is the prob, maybe slipping. Whether you need a tune-up or not is irrelevent when your turning 5500RPMs at 75. My ol' F-250 would churn 3800RPM at 55mph and thats a lot on a v8, but I've never seen a car geared as low as that thing.

5500@75mph??.That too is interesting.Tire rotations is a tough way of gear ratios. The tire diameter does come into play.Could it be a number of factors at the same time??.

Here are some formulas to try to work into you issue.

Hi 91camaro350,

Welcome to the Chevy Forums.

There IS something wrong here. As an example, at a paltry 3500RPM, my 3 1/2 ton truck, with a 364 engine is roaring along at over 85 MPH with 410 gears. Which means that EITHER some hammer of an owner prior to you saw fit to install INSANE differential cogs(like 583s) in your car, OR you have a major bug in the system.

Did you acquire the vehicle like this, or did it just start malfunctioning in this manner?

Information is crucial here. Critical information you need to find out/provide would be :

Are you the original owner, or did you buy the car used?

What is the mileage?

What is your maintenance paradigm?

What type of transmission?(specific type, like "THM350" as opposed to "automatic")

What's the RPO for the differential? Any possibility it's been changed? What is the actual gear ratio?

Is the engine/drivetrain original or has it been changed? A giveaway to outrageous gears is large "slicks" on the rear. What type of tires are you using? Highway radials? Standard rims?

I can't help feeling that the closer you get to providing us with these answers, the more likely your problem will either be solved or become obvious...

First, replace the EGR valve and gasket. This is going to cause you a world of hurt both in and out of performance issues, until you get it fixed.

Second, what type of transmission? Is it an automatic? Manual? A four speed with a broken synchromesh in fourth gear would only shift to third, which would explain the high revs at 75MPH.

What are the tire SIZES? I tried repeatedly to access your photobucket, with no success.
